Interview with Derek
1. If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?
Derek: I would go fishing, go for a picnic with my family/friends or cook and create new recipes.
2. If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?
Derek: Nelson Mandela.
3. What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?
Derek: To me, perfect happiness is being surrounded by the people I love the most. I’m currently at a crossroads in my life, where I’m chasing my dream of perfect happiness but it seems elusive to me. My emotions are all over the place. I know I have to reach a decision soon, but so many questions are still unanswered.
“Nothing is perfect. Life is messy. Relationships are complex. Outcomes, uncertain. People, irrational.”
This is the opening line of the blurb of my debut, A Way Back Into Love. I have received numerous compliments from friends, readers and fans on this line. Some have even said that the opening line of the blurb is so beautiful that the story feels this big compared to it. But, let me tell you a secret. I didn’t come up with this line.
The line is a quote actually, that I read online a long while back. I’m a quote-junkie; I love reading beautiful quotes about love, life and friendship online. I was doing my regular research on quotes when I chanced upon this particular one. And I immediately fell in love with it. And then I thought, “This fits my book so well. Why not use it in the blurb?”
Excerpt of A Way Back Into Love
Derek let out a frustrated sigh and ran his fingers through his hair. "Em…I mean that…It’s just this person you have become. The Emily I used to know didn’t hit on random guys at the bar."
Emily crossed her arms over her chest and gave Derek a glare. "Five years is a long time, Derek. Maybe I have changed," she said, "And besides, why do you care so much?"
Derek glared back at her as he replied harshly, "Oh, so you have changed so much over the last five years that now you throw yourself at random men like a…” he trailed off, not finishing his sentence.
My favourite romantic song
A romantic song...Oh boy, is this difficult! I’m a hopeless, incurable, true romantic at heart. I love all things romance, be it music or literature or art. To name one romantic song out of the hundreds of thousands I’ve heard in my lifetime sure is tough. But, I want to let my readers know these little things about me. Because after all, these little quirks and idiosyncrasies are the ones that matter most and bring people closer.
Since I have to choose, my favourite romantic song of the week is ‘A Year Without Rain’ by Selena Gomez and The Scene. It has been stuck in my head all day long. I’ve been humming it to myself quietly while travelling, which earned me a few weird looks from my relatives. But, no worries, these kinds of things happen to me all the time. (Guffaw)
